How does a net maker work, how does a bottom trawl operate, and what effect do trawl doors have on the net’s performance underwater?
These were just some of the questions Norwegian students had answered when they visited Flume Tank North Sea in Hirtshals this week.
The students are taking a fisheries course at Nordkapp Upper Secondary School, and their teachers requested an educational programme that would enhance the students’ knowledge by allowing them to see things in practice rather than only in textbooks.
In collaboration with their teacher, we put together a programme with a wide range of topics.
The day consisted of:
- A welcome with a presentation of Flume Tank North Sea and the North Sea Science Park
- A workshop in the net-maker workshop, focusing on scale models, with net-makers Dennis and Magnus
- A display of various trawls in the tank
- A display of trawl doors with a demonstration and explanation of their effect
Teacher Daniel Mikkelsen was delighted with the visit to the flume tank in Hirtshals, which proved highly valuable for students.
“Distances are vast in Finnmark, Norway, and I have considerable experience with distance learning. I recognize the importance of face‑to‑face teaching and hands‑on demonstrations in ensuring the best learning outcomes. That’s why seeing the equipment in action in the flume tank provides a much deeper understanding than simply showing pictures,” he says.
